Finding Your True North
“True north is guidance, your orienting point, your fixed point in a spinning world that helps you stay on track. It’s your internal compass unique to you and only you, representing who you are at your deepest level. True north is a sense of being at home within yourself. What feels good to you at your core is your true north. When you find your true north, you discover your authentic self. It’s a combination of your purpose and your beliefs. You decide what you value most in life and put that at the forefront.“
~Elizabeth Perry
As I assembled this canvas, I found inspiration during a challenging time as I navigated my grieving process. I felt off-balance and confused, which led me to realize that I needed to rediscover my “true north.” Working on this canvas encouraged me to sit quietly and reflect, allowing me to reconnect with my deepest sense of self.
I created this piece by attaching an inexpensive compass to a painted background that represents the universe or cosmos. I added windblown ribbons and a white feather to give the impression that the compass is flying or traveling toward me. A key and a glass heart symbolize my desire to understand my heart and soul, guiding me toward the person I am meant to be in this partnerless world.
I once read a quote that stated that rather than coming up with ideas or inspiration, we should encourage them to come down to us. If we open ourselves to it, inspiration comes from the universe or whatever we consider to be a source of higher power. This idea helped me to move forward, finding a path to the person, the artist I was now meant to be.
