Nurturing Gratitude

As the holiday season begins, I am reminded of the importance of focusing on gratitude and the positivity that being thankful brings.
Although this season sometimes reminds me of the things I no longer have, focusing on hope, optimism, and gratitude is an emotional antidote to the sadness of longing for the past.
I created this piece years ago after my husband’s diagnosis. We found ourselves in a lush field of sunflowers under a blue summer sky. I felt fragile and vulnerable as I considered our future while our relatively carefree life faded away. I felt disconnected from the relaxation and joy others seemed to be experiencing as they basked under the sun, surrounded by blossoms.
My husband seemed to be taking it all in. He didn’t appear worried or anxious but enjoyed the moment—he was so good at that! Suddenly, I was overcome by a feeling of being one with nature, the flowers, and the moment. Here we were, celebrating this glorious day together, and things were just lovely for those moments.
Days later, I remembered that feeling and began creating this piece to honor them. I altered the photographic background and added details with thin layers of unryu paper. After drawing and coloring her face, I styled her hair using gold and yellow paper scraps. I enjoy mixing colors, textures, and patterns. It is a meditative process for me! I crafted a sunflower and placed it in her hands to symbolize positivity and uplifting thoughts, reminding myself to keep my thoughts in the present whenever possible.
